Newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? Try DESMOND 9 February 2016 DESMOND is the only evidence based self-management education program for people with type 2 diabetes in Australia. The program is based on group activities and shared experiences, delivered by two speciality trained DESMOND educators. DESMOND ”short for Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed” aims to help participants to take control of their own condition. During the session, participants create their own health plans, based on their own needs and circumstances. The DESMOND program is the only evidence-based education program in Australia that emphasises that, for a person with type 2 diabetes, their most valuable health resource is themselves, said Deb Schofield, general manager of DESMOND Australia. There is evidence to show that better self-management of diabetes can result in significant and sustained weight loss, increased physical activity levels, and improved wellbeing. Adapted from DESMOND UK, DESMOND Australia commenced in Perth in June 2011. Nearly 1400 Australians have completed the program. Sessions run weekly in regional and metro WA and the program has expanded to Tasmania, NSW, Victoria (pilot), ACT and New Zealand. Topics include: Food choices Physical activity Complication risks Self-management planning Goal setting Recently, the DESMOND program was awarded the primary health prize at the Rotary Allied Health Excellence Community Awards, which recognises significant achievements made by allied health professionals working within WA Health.
