No sugar-coating, no lectures — just open conversations about what it’s like to live with type 1 diabetes as a young person. • Brodie Sargent on being a country kid and a marathon world record chaser – Kick back with Brodie Sargent, tattoo artist, rugby player, marathon runner, and proud T1D advocate.  Brodie shares his laid-back (but driven) approach to life with type 1, from smashing goals on the field to raising awareness with 50km runs. We dive into his journey, getting inked and why a diagnosis doesn’t define what’s possible.   

• Nikki Findlay on mental health and a life full of adventures – Talking about burnout, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges isn’t always easy, especially when you feel invisible. Nikki Findlay is changing that by using her voice to advocate for real, lasting change. In this episode, we sit down for an open and honest conversation about mental health, including discussions around suicide. It might be heavy and, if this one’s not right for you, that’s completely okay. 

• Brett Findlay on parenthood, brain injury, and resilience – At 25, Brett Findlay was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and later experienced a traumatic brain injury due to his diabetes. While his mates were out living their 20s to the fullest, Brett was forced to rebuild his life. In this powerful episode, Seb and Isabella sit down with Brett to talk hypo awareness, healing after trauma, and finding new ways forward. It’s honest, moving, and a reminder that there’s strength in starting again. 

Brett Findlay had just started a new job when he learnt he had type 1 diabetes. He figured he could manage diabetes by keeping his blood glucose levels consistently low. Then, one fateful day, he had a severe hypo. In this raw episode of Life on the Level, Brett talks about hypo unawareness, rebuilding after trauma, and the enduring strength of family.  

A surprise diagnosis in his twenties 

“Aged 24, diabetes was not the diagnosis I expected,” Brett says. “I was managing a busy hotel venue on the Gold Coast, and I thought I was simply working too hard. I went to the doctor because I knew something wasn’t right. When the doctor got my test results, he called me straight back in.”  

Over the following years, Brett chose to manage his diabetes himself, rarely consulting health professionals. He thought that by running his levels constantly low, he could stay on track.  

Developing hypo unawareness 

Brett and his family relocated to Coffs Harbour, where he joined his brother in the banking industry. While he felt like he was on top of everything, Brett had developed hypoglycaemia unawareness, a dangerous condition when you become unaware of the early warning signs of a hypo. 

In 2023, Brett was shopping with his children when he had a seizure, losing consciousness and hitting the floor so hard that he fractured his skull. While Brett has no memory of the event, his six-year-old daughter grabbed her younger brother, covering his eyes. When the paramedics arrived, she told them her dad was a type 1 diabetic.   

Traumatic brain injury: a long road back 

“I woke up in the hospital yelling at everyone,” Brett recalls. “I didn’t understand what had happened.”  

Brett spent months in the hospital and rehabilitation in Sydney. Back at home, he receives support from the local brain injury rehabilitation service. While Brett tried to return to work six months after his injury, it didn’t go well. He is currently on a career break and planning a gradual return to work.  

Finding new ways to manage life with T1D and TBI 

Brett knows his story could have turned out differently had it not been for the Australian health system, income protection and his family. He’s keen to never put his loved ones through the trauma of another severe hypo. Brett now uses a continuous glucose monitor and insulin pump, aiming to keep his blood glucose levels within a healthy range.  

“I want to be sure I’m here for my wife and kids,” Brett says. “It’s taken time to build up their trust again and show them that I can manage my diabetes.”

In this episode of the Life on the Level podcast, Brett shares the pivotal experiences that forced him to re-evaluate his life and health. He also highlights the positives that have come from his journey, such as having more time for socialising and volunteering as a speaker to support other brain injury survivors. His story is a stark reminder of the importance of prioritising what matters in life and the resilience of the human spirit.   

New data from self-serve health check stations reveals as many as one in three Queenslanders could have risk factors that they should discuss with their health professional. 

The data reinforces the need for greater access to early screening, an area that’s being addressed through a pilot partnership between șÚÁÏÍű, Target Australia, and SiSU Health, that could help people catch their risk of chronic conditions sooner. 

The data also highlights the need for preventative screening that’s accessible and affordable, and reduces stigma for consumers. 

Some of the risk factors identified included high blood pressure, very high body mass index (BMI, greater than 35), and type 2 diabetes risk, as measured by AUSDRISK criteria. 

The findings also highlight the significant potential of preventative screening to reduce complications, benefiting individuals and easing pressure on the health system.  

Health check stations are self-serve TGA-registered medical devices that can provide validated screening results in minutes, which can give baseline health data which supports conversations with health professionals. 

Thanks to the partnership, health check stations have been available in selected Target stores in South Australia for 4 weeks and so far almost 5,000 people have undergone a health check. 

The partnership now has 10 stations available across selected Target stores in Queensland, allowing shoppers to check things like blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight, body composition, and risk of developing type 2 diabetes (against AUSDRISK criteria), all discreetly delivered directly by secure app.  

Currently, almost 260,000 Queenslanders live with type 2 diabetes, with a further 102,500 estimated to be living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Nationally, 2 million Australians are living with all types of diabetes.

Ms Cain said the partnership with Target reflects șÚÁÏÍű’s commitment to innovative approaches to prevention.  

“These health stations at Target stores provide a simple way for people to learn their risk, track their results, and, if needed, seek support early through their GP or health professional. Small steps like this can make a big difference.” 

Target will host the health stations in 10 participating Queensland stores, in addition to the 10 already-deployed locations in South Australia, as part of the pilot, providing customers with a convenient five-minute check while they shop.

The health checks have already proven successful in other settings, with thousands of Australians using health stations each year to proactively monitor their health.  

Machines are now available in Target stores across Queensland. Participating stores include: Bundaberg, Carindale, Strathpine, Rockhampton, Morayfield, Ipswich, Browns Plains, Mt Gravatt, Mt Ommaney, Runaway Bay. 

For Leigh Sargent, the most precious Mother’s Day gift is having her sons with her, especially now that they live far from their country home. Leigh’s youngest, Brodie, has type 1 diabetes, and Leigh remembers vividly his diagnosis and their family’s path back to normal.

A mother’s instinct

“Living in Mudgee, we struggled to get doctors’ appointments,” Leigh says. “Brodie had been sick for a few weeks but never complained. He was 15. I started noticing he was getting very tired in the afternoons. He was also peeing often and losing weight. I knew something wasn’t right.

“I remember dropping him off to fish with his mates and getting straight back on the phone again to the doctor. Thankfully, they’d just had a cancellation. I told my boss I’d be back later, but I didn’t return to work for 10 days.”

From the doctor’s office to emergency

From that crucial appointment, Leigh recalls, everything became a whirlwind: blood tests, a 1.5-hour drive to Dubbo Hospital emergency department, and further tests.

“Brodie’s older brother, Lachie, googled his symptoms and said, ‘It could be diabetes’. I thought that was unlikely. I thought diabetes was genetic, and no one in our family had it.”  

“Our ED doctor was incredible. He explained calmly and confidently to Brodie that he had type 1 diabetes,” Leigh says. “I was scared but pretending to be calm. That doctor walked me out of the room and said, ‘Everything will be OK’. His reassurance was exactly what I needed at that moment.”

Leigh and Brodie spent a week in the hospital, with her husband and Lachie joining for training. Leigh found this time overwhelming but heard crucial advice from the care team.

“They said, ‘The most important thing you can do is to help Brodie accept it’. I took that to heart. As parents, we worked hard at making diabetes a normal part of our family’s life and ensuring that Brodie lived like every other teenage country kid.”

Adjusting to life at home

Leigh’s hospitality background made managing Brodie’s meals easy. She substituted ingredients, counted carbs, and adjusted their family meals. But she wanted more information about living well with diabetes.

“In the hospital, we heard a lot about what he couldn’t do. Looking back, I wish that information had been more positive.”

Leigh researched online and found locals who knew about diabetes. “I had to face my fears, like thinking that he’d die young. I learned my next-door neighbour’s dad had diabetes and was 80. A friend’s son talked with me about what worked for him, and my chiropractor recommended the ±èŽÇ»ćłŠČčČőłÙ.”

“Early on, Brodie said to me, ‘Mum, all you ever talk about to me now is diabetes.’ From then, we agreed that I’d text him if I saw his insulin needed correcting or wanted to share information with him.”

A new kind of normal

As the family adapted, things grew easier. Still, for a while, Leigh kept Brodie in sight. When he moved out at 18, Leigh grew nervous again.

“I knew that he needed to, but I was so used to watching him. I used the Dexcom Follow app to monitor him, even calling his housemate once at night. Everything was fine. Now, I let him handle it himself.”

Blazing new trails 

While Leigh still wishes she could have diabetes instead of Brodie, she recognises what a strong, capable, and determined person he is.

“I’d like to think he would have been that person anyway, but diabetes has made him extra resilient. It has also led to some new adventures, which are inspiring others. The next for Brodie is Kokoda as a team leader for the , along with his brother. Thankfully for my peace of mind, there’s also a diabetes nurse on board.”  

Leigh wants other mums of children newly diagnosed with diabetes to know it will be OK. “Diabetes may be a rocky start, but it gets easier,” she says. “I have never wanted him not to do something because of his diabetes. Anything is possible. Maybe with some tweaks, but possible.”

Tasmania’s Parliament has welcomed a delegation of people living with diabetes, raising awareness of life with the condition, highlighting the importance of preventing complications, and sharing their stories about the positive impact that diabetes technology has on their daily lives.  

Meeting with lawmakers from across the political spectrum, the șÚÁÏÍű-led event heard about the impact preventative telephone health coaching programs like The COACH Program have in the Tasmanian community.  

Attendees also heard about the national campaign for more equitable access to technology including continuous glucose monitors (CGM) and automatic insulin delivery (AID) systems. 

șÚÁÏÍű Group CEO Justine Cain thanked members of Parliament from all sides and all chambers for their interest and support of people living with diabetes in Tasmania.  

“No one chooses diabetes, and thanks to the support of the Tasmanian Parliament, we’re taking big steps to support people living with diabetes in Tasmania to live healthy and fulfilling lives,” she said.  

“Just last weekend, Deputy Premier Guy Barnett led the 19th Pollie Pedal charity bike ride through 300 kilometres of Tasmanian scenery to raise money to support people living with diabetes, cutting-edge research, and activities to help prevent and delay diabetes.  

“We’re grateful for the support of the Tasmanian Government, through prevention programs like The COACH Program, which help support people in many vulnerable and at-risk communities right across Tasmania. 

“A big thank you to every Council and Assembly member for your ongoing support of people living with diabetes in Tasmania.” 

Tasmanian Minister for Health, Mental Health, and Wellbeing, the Hon. Bridget Archer, welcomed the delegation to Parliament.  

“I thank șÚÁÏÍű for its strong support of The Health Revolution, Tasmania’s 20-year preventive health strategy, and for its tireless work and ongoing partnership in improving diabetes outcomes for Tasmanians,” Minister Archer said. 

“Hearing first hand from people living with diabetes helps us to understand how we can ease the challenge of living with diabetes for people across the state.” 

șÚÁÏÍű State General Manager, Impact and Innovation (Tas) Minke Hoekstra said delivery of local prevention programs like The COACH Program were helping to prevent and delay diabetes and associated complications, like cardiovascular disease, by helping Tasmanians lead healthier lives.  

“More than 32,000 people live with diabetes across Tasmania, with another estimated 12,000 silently living with type 2 diabetes,” she said.  

“The COACH Program has seen positive outcomes over the last two years including improved glucose levels and increased physical activity.   

“These results show the importance of prevention programs that give people the tools and resources to lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.  

“Thank you to all Assembly and Council members for your ongoing support of people living with diabetes in Tasmania – your support helps our community to thrive.” 

Around 50 people living with diabetes and their families and supporters gathered at Tasmania’s State Parliament on 18 March to discuss life with diabetes across all sides of Parliament. 

The starter’s gun has fired for a pollie-powered peloton as the 19th PolliePedal began its 300km ride with a visit to a Hobart primary school, before winding through some of Tasmania’s scenic routes and locations over the next three days.  

Riders called in to Margate Primary School on Hobart’s southern suburbs on the first leg of their ride to speak with students and raise awareness of life with diabetes. 

The riders are led by Tasmanian Deputy Premier Guy Barnett for the 19^th time and include riders living with diabetes and supporters of the diabetes community.   

Funds raised will go to cutting-edge research into diabetes prevention and the search for a cure; giving young people living with diabetes a sense of community through programs like DiaBuddies; as well as wider community programs that directly support people living with diabetes.

The scorecard from the 2025 Boxing Day Test health checks is in, with more than 7,400 Shane Warne Legacy Health Checks resulting in over one third of participants being encouraged to see their GP for a follow-up discussion.  

The off-field findings highlight the importance of preventative screening, as more than a quarter of those encouraged to see their GP were prompted because of type 2 diabetes risk.

“The great thing about the SWL Health Checks is that they are free, quick and self-serve, and can help start a conversation with a health professional,” Ms Cain said.

“While not all diabetes can be prevented, we know that 58 percent of type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented or delayed. For that to happen, we need to reach people who are at risk, and at this year’s Test we’ve done that for thousands of individuals.

“Shane was a beloved figure not just in Australian sports but as an iconic personality with a passion for community. șÚÁÏÍű is proud to partner with SWL to encourage greater diabetes awareness and screening,” she said.

The Shane Warne Legacy CEO Helen Nolan said “we’re learning so much at the Legacy, but one lesson keeps coming back to me: our bodies talk to us. Through ways we can easily brush off as nothing.

“In early February 2022 Shane said to me, ‘For the first time in my life I feel exhausted. I need a proper break. Three months. Is there a way?’

“I had never heard him say that before. So, I cleared his schedule. Declined invitations. Moved commitments. Blocked out three full months. He was on Day 1 of that break.

“And contrary to what was reported, he wasn’t seeing a heart specialist or any doctor. He had no idea what was about to unfold.

“It’s such a simple lesson, but I think about it every day: when your body speaks, listen.

“That’s exactly why the Shane Warne Legacy exists. We’ve made it easy to check your health for free in just four minutes, no appointment needed. You can sit down at a self-serve machine and know your numbers. Why wouldn’t you?” Ms Nolan said.

Free Shane Warne Legacy (SWL) Health Checks were offered at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for two days during the Boxing Day Test, in partnership with the Legacy’s founding partner, Latrobe Health Services, and health partner șÚÁÏÍű.

During the Test, 56 SiSU Health Stations were available throughout the MCG, giving cricket fans easy access to quick, non-invasive health assessments. Each self-serve station measures blood pressure, body composition, heart rate, and BMI, with results delivered instantly on-screen and via the SiSU Health mobile app

Participants’ 5-year risk of developing type 2 diabetes was measured using the Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk (AUDSRISK) tool, delivered via the Health Station.

A participant follow-up survey sent to all health check participants four weeks after testing sought to understand the impact of the health checks on participant lifestyle choices, basic health literacy, and GP outcomes.

Of the survey respondents, almost two-thirds (65%) had made or plan lifestyle changes within the 4 weeks, whilst over three-quarters (77%) were more confident understanding their heart health and diabetes risk.

Australians working across diabetes care, endocrinology, vascular medicine and First Nations health have been recognised in the 2026 Australia Day Honours. 

șÚÁÏÍű congratulates these award recipients who reflect the depth of expertise that is addressing diabetes as one of the most urgent and complex health challenges facing Australia. 

Among those recognised is Professor Shirley Jansen of Western Australia, appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to vascular surgery and cardiovascular science. Professor Jansen is Professor of Vascular Surgery and Director of the Heart and Vascular Research Institute at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and co lead of Cardiovascular Science and Diabetes at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. Her work sits at the intersection of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and clinical research, strengthening understanding of complications that affect thousands of Australians each year. 

Queensland health leader Floyd Leedie has also been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to Indigenous health in Queensland. As CEO of Goondir Health Service since 2008, Mr Leedie has led the delivery of culturally safe primary health care across regional Queensland, supporting communities where diabetes prevalence and complications remain disproportionately high. șÚÁÏÍű is proud to have been associated with this work at Goondir Health through its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement team. 

Dr Kunwarjit Singh Sangla of Queensland has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to endocrinology and to rural and Indigenous communities in Queensland. 

For more than 25 years, Dr Sangla has delivered specialist diabetes care through face to face outreach clinics across Central, West and North Queensland, complemented by telehealth and ongoing clinical support for patients and practitioners. His work has expanded access to specialist care in some of the most remote parts of the state. 

In New South Wales, Shirley Brown has been awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding public service to health in nursing and chronic care services. An Aboriginal Chronic Care nurse with Western Sydney Local Health District, Ms Brown works at the Mount Druitt Community Health Centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Monday Clinic, delivering culturally appropriate diabetes care and long term support. 

Together, these honours highlight the critical role of clinical leadership, research excellence and community-focused care in reducing the impact of diabetes and improving health outcomes across Australia.

șÚÁÏÍű today announced an important two-year partnership with Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) under its flagship charity program, SCA Embrace.

The collaboration will strengthen șÚÁÏÍű’s efforts to improve awareness, understanding and support for the two million Australians living with diabetes, as well as those at risk. It will also deliver significant in-kind advertising across SCA’s 104 radio stations and digital platforms, amplifying important information about diabetes.

One Australian is diagnosed with diabetes every five minutes, with more than 141,000 people living with type 1 diabetes, 1.3 million people living with type 2 diabetes, and a further 500,000 estimated to be living with undiagnosed diabetes.

The SCA Embrace partnership will help to increase community understanding of diabetes risk, symptoms and prevention where possible, and complications management where prevention is not possible, while also helping to address misinformation and stigma that continue to affect people living with the condition.

Behind the diabetes statistics are individuals facing a heightened risk of serious complications, including heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, vision loss and amputations.

Diabetes already costs the Australian health system $9.1 billion each year, with rates rising among younger Australians. Over the past decade, diagnoses among people in their 20s and 30s have increased by 44 per cent.

The impact is particularly severe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, who experience some of the highest recorded rates of type 2 diabetes in the world and are nearly five times more likely to be hospitalised with diabetes-related complications.

“Last year, over 13,000 cricket fans underwent a SWL Health Check at the Boxing Day Test, and we’re aiming for even more in 2025,” Ms Cain said. 

“While not all diabetes can be prevented, and some people are at higher risk due to genetic factors or family history, we know that 58 percent of type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented or delayed. For that to happen, we need to reach people who are at risk. 

“This Boxing Day Test, we’re encouraging attendees to take a few minutes out of their day to visit the SWL Health Check stations and get to know their numbers. 

“The great thing about the SWL Health Checks is that they are free, quick and self-serve, and they give people information on their key health metrics that can help start a conversation with their health professional.

1.3 million Australians are living with type 2 diabetes, and 2 million more are at risk, which could include around 7,000 people at risk in a stadium the size of the MCG â€“ or 1 in 14 attendees.

This year 56 SiSU Health Stations will be available throughout the MCG, giving cricket fans easy access to quick, non-invasive health assessments. Each self-serve station measures blood pressure, body composition, heart rate, BMI, and AUSDRISK, with results delivered instantly on-screen and via the SiSU Health mobile app. 

In addition to the self-serve stations, clinician-led finger-prick blood tests for cholesterol and blood glucose levels will be offered to eligible participants. If elevated risks are identified, users are encouraged to follow up with a healthcare professional.
